Challenge: The assignment was to provide the complete architectural detailing for the Westerhoven commercial building. The emphasis here lies on selecting and applying standard construction techniques, materials, and details. A great deal of freedom was granted in making these choices. The 'traditional barn' is not based solely on superficial stylistic features but calls for transparency and appropriate structures. The imposing roof refers to a farmhouse but also honors the desire to reference the adjacent residence. The risk of extreme adaptation to the context is that it becomes an excuse for laziness and repetition without any critical scrutiny. As a result, the formal repertoire changes hardly at all and fails to adapt to changing societal conditions. It is important to avoid a retro style, yet to produce an architecture that is perceived as pleasant based on recognition and accepts such a volume in this sensitive, distinctive location.
